The Thought stream captures the reasoning and context behind the work: why an approach was chosen, what was considered and set aside, what the operator or Runner was looking at when it moved.
What it captures
Outcomes are cheap to log; reasoning is where the value hides, and where it usually evaporates. Thought keeps the working context: the retrieval a Runner cited from the Knowledge Fabric, the alternatives it weighed, the policy it checked, the assumption a reviewer made. When a BSA analyst clears an alert as seasonal cash rather than structuring, the why is Thought, and it is exactly what a fresh pair of eyes (human or Runner) needs six months later when a similar pattern shows up.
Why it matters
A loop that captures only outcomes repeats its mistakes with confidence. Thought is what lets the next Item reason from the last one instead of re-deriving it: the Runner reads the prior reasoning, not just the prior answer. It is also what makes a Decision defensible, the record of not only what was chosen but what it was chosen over.
In practice
Thought is not a mandatory essay field bolted onto the job. It is captured from what the work already produces, the prompts, the citations, the reviewer's note, so it accrues without turning operating into documenting.
